From 1st January 2021 any commercial vessel where the keel was laid on or after that date and which is intending to operate within the North Sea Emission Control Area is required to be fitted with a diesel engine which complies with MARPOL Tier III requirements.
There is provision where the total installed power is 750kW or less for the UK MCA to provide an exemption. The exemption must be made to the MCA and must detail reasons why a Tier III engine cannot be installed.
